Differences between Accelerators/Search Provider/Toolbars and Extensions/Webslices/Tracking Protection List

 

When you install these (except toolbar and extension), IE will create registry key under:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Activities

Download files are kept under this folder:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Services\
        Both xml file and favicon is saved/cached under this. Folder is not visible in explorer.

It has three folders under that:
    DOMStore     -> All DOM Storage data is saved under this folder.
    Services     -> All addon details are saved here.
    iconcache    -> Icon’s are cached here.

Accelerators:
    Enhance your ability to work with text that you select on a webpage.
        You select a text in a webpage and right click on that. It will extend the right click.
    XML file is hosted to describe the accelerator.
        Permission is asked to install it.
    JS function: window.external.AddService()
    XML root tag: openServiceDescription
    No javascript or native code is downloaded/executed.

Search Provider:
    Search provider provides an option to do the search without visiting the search website.
    XML file is hosted to describe the search provider.
        Permission is asked to install it.
    JS function: window.external.AddSearchProvider()
    XML root tag: OpenSearchDescription
    No javascript or native code is downloaded/executed.

Toolbars and Extensions:
    Native binary that extends the browser.
       eg, silverlight
    Permission is asked to install it.
   
Webslices:
    Can add an URL entry in the favorites list.
    JS function: window.external.addToFavoritesBar()
    No javascript or native code is downloaded/executed.
   
Tracking Protection List:
    Can add an URL entry into the “tracking protection list”.
    Permission is asked to install it.
    No javascript or native code is downloaded/executed.
    JS function: window.external.msAddTrackingProtectionList()
